Blackpool Pleasure Beach – The Park

The park was founded in 1896 by William Bean, who was looking to introduce ‘an American Style Amusement Park’. What he probably meant by this was to make adults feel younger again, which sounds good to me!

There’s some pretty strong evidence of this too. The park was managed by his brother-in-law, Leonard Thompson, until the 1970s and then by his son, William Thompson, until his death in 2004. And the family connection doesn’t end there. The park is currently managed by Leonard’s grand-daughter, Amanda Thompson. Proof that amusement park’s keep you feeling young, perhaps.

The park has a mixture of traditional wooden rides, modern steel roller-coasters, small family rides, highly-advanced thrill rides and generations-old rides still in original working order. Other major attractions include the many shows the park has on offer, including Forbidden at the Globe and Hot Ice at the Arena.

The Pleasure Beach has in recent years been undergoing a major refurbishment – with the park’s rebranding to simply “Pleasure Beach“, many of the wooden roller coasters have been repainted, and most of the walkways have been resurfaced. The refurbishments continued in 2007 with many of the signs in the park replaced. Also in 2007 saw the opening of “Infusion” – a Suspended Looping Coaster, relocated from Pleasure Beach’s now-defunct sister park, Pleasureland, in nearby Southport.

In 2007, the Pleasure Beach was judged to be the joint fifth best amusement park in the world (with Disneyland in California, United States) in the Amusement Today Golden Ticket Awards, and was the only British park to feature in any category. Pleasure Beach was the highest ranked European amusement park in the awards, beating Disneyland, Paris.

Blackpool Pleasure Beach Avalanche, find out what it’s like to take part in the Winter Olympics on this fantastic bobsled roller coaster ride, Avalanche. Travel down the track at over 70 kph.

Blackpool Pleasure Beach Big Dipper, one of the original Big Dipper’s opened way back in 1923.

The Pepsi Max Big One, when opened, was the tallest and fastest roller-coaster in the world and is still one of the biggest and best rides around.

Blackpool Pleasure Beach Bling, is one of the most bling-tastic rides in the UK. This diamond knuckle experience will take you 100 feet into the air spinning on three bling encrusted gondolas at speeds of 60 mph. Delboy would love it!

Grand National Blackpool, is a unique roller coaster at Blackpool Pleasure Beach. Two trains race along the split track at top speeds to see who’ll win.

Blackpool Pleasure Beach Ice Blast, is a terrifying ride that was the first of its kind in the UK. You will be fired 210 feet into the sky before dropping back to earth on an incredible free fall descent!

Blackpool Pleasure Beach Infusion, is an amazing roller coaster ride. With a fantastic top speed of over 75 kph, the Infusion is one of the stars at Blackpool.
