Chessington Zoo
The zoo is one of the oldest parts of the park but remains one of the most popular parts. The zoo includes a section dedicated to the big animal attractions such as gorillas, tigers, lions and leopards. There are also less familiar animals such as capybaras, rhea, wallabies and meerkats. Situated alongside the bird and monkey garden is the new children’s zoo which is home to goats, pigs, sheep and chickens.
In 2008, a Sea Life Centre opened on the site of the children’s zoo, and is home to various tropical fish. The centrepiece of the exhibit is the glass tropical tunnel.
Beanoland
Beanoland is unsurprisingly based around The Beano comic. This section has several rides; Roger the Dodger’s Dodgems, Billy’s Whizzer, a wave-swinger with water fountains, Dennis’s Madhouse and the Bash Street Bus.
Forbidden Kingdom
Themed around Ancient Egypt, this section is home to the Tomb Blaster, an interactive laser-shooting attraction where riders fire laser guns at targets, and Rameses Revenge which is one of the most thrilling rides in the park.
Land of the Dragons
Land of the Dragons is a dragon-themed area containing mostly children’s rides. The main ride is a spinning wild-mouse roller coaster called Dragon’s Fury. In a poll of the best steel roller coasters in the world, Dragon’s Fury ranked 30th.
Market Square
Market Square is the central area of the park and home to shops, video arcades and food stalls. Outlets include KFC, Pizza Hut, a doughnut stall and the park’s main shop. The land also contains the entrance to the Safari Skyway monorail, which offers a guided tour of the zoo area.
Mexicana
Themed on a Mexican and Far West environment, Mexicana is home to two rollercoasters. Rattlesnake is the main roller coaster in this area. With a height restriction of 1.4 metres this is one of the few rides that only older, or at least taller, visitors can ride. The other roller coaster in Mexicana is the ‘Runaway Train’. This is a powered roller coaster aimed at the whole family.
Mystic East
Mystic East is home to the Dragon Falls log flume. Much of the ride’s theme is based on actual monuments, including Angkor Wat, the Great Buddha of KÅtoku-in, and the Merlion of Singapore’s harbour. Mystic East is also home to ‘Panning for Gold’, a game where visitors sift through sand to find ‘gold’ pieces.
Pirates Cove
Pirates Cove is a small land adjacent to Transylvania. This area is home to the ‘Black Buccaneer’, a swinging pirate ship installed in 1988. This swinging ship is larger than most pirate ship rides found in other theme parks. The ‘Seastorm’ is a small circular ride where riders sit in small boats that bob up and down as they are rotated round.
Toytown
Toytown is found in the centre of the park, adjacent to Market Square. It is home to a number of gentle rides for young children. The rides include a Carousel, ‘Flying Jumbos’ and the ‘Berry Bouncers’. There are also two car rides within Toytown – ‘Tiny Truckers’ and ‘Toadie’s Crazy Cars’.
Transylvania
Transylvania is home to two rides. The main ride in this area is the Vampire which has a relatively low height restriction but still, reaches speeds of upto 45mph. The second ride is the Bubbleworks which takes you on a tour of a soap factory!
