UEFA Euro 2016 Football Championships
The UEFA Euro 2016 Football Championships or Euro 2016 for short, are guaranteed to be an exciting spectacle. Europe is widely regarded to contain the most talented footballers of any continent, able to impress with their skills, strength and speed in any arena. It is certainly the continent with the most impressive club teams – from Manchester United and Chelsea to Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Generally, international matches are even more impressive. As players fulfil their lifelong ambitions to play for their country and fans cheer with patriotic fervour for their team; passions reach fever pitch and the games themselves become spectacles of drama and skill.
The recent European Football Championships have all been successes, with sell-out crowds and dazzling performances at every level. Any football fan in England will remember Euro 1996, hosted in England and with the host nation almost making it to the final. Southgate’s missed penalty against Germany spelled a dramatic end to their title bid that has not been forgotten since. In 2004, Greece won the title in a shock victory over hosts Portugal. The odds of a Greek win had been set at 150/1 at the start of the tournament, so a few gamblers were made very happy with this result! Such is the beauty of football, and specifically the European Football Championships. Anything is possible and shock scenarios frequently occur. Euro 2016 is sure to provide similar drama.
When this article was written, the four countries in line to host the competition were France, Italy, Turkey and a joint Norway-Sweden combination. A decision is due to be made in May 2010 about the winning bid. Any one of these countries would provide an excellent venue in terms of their culture and friendliness. In addition, France, Italy, Norway and Sweden already have world class stadiums and Turkey has plans to build brand new stadiums to host the games. Therefore whatever the decision of the Union of European Football Associations, UEFA, the championships are sure to be a fantastic event.
Perhaps the most exciting thing about Euro 2016 is that the number of participating teams will increase from 16 to 24. This will not only bolster the volume and frequency of matches, but it will also increase the level of competition and push the teams to new limits. More matches also means more tickets, but that won’t stop this tournament from selling out before you can blink. Luckily, however, tickets for large events such as this one are sold in stages so there will be several opportunities to buy them if you miss out at any point.
Tickets obviously aren’t available at this early stage, but this site is the best place to stay informed. You can sign up for email updates that will alert you to any developments on ticket sales in our free newsletter. Online official ticket vendors are undoubtedly the best places to buy tickets in terms of safety and efficiency. Indeed UEFA agree that the internet is the – fastest, safest and easiest – way to get tickets. We can give you details of the best deals from such sites as and when we hear about them, but it is likely that official tickets will only be available through one outlet: the official Euro 2016 website. It would be risky to buy tickets from unofficial vendors such as internet auction sites as these can be rendered void by the Euro 2016 organisers, so receiving our newsletter will help you stay ahead of the game and ensure that your tickets are valid on match day. Tickets tend to be released about a year in advance of the competition, so you need to be prepared to buy early.
Prices at the last tournament, Euro 2008, ranged from €45 – €110 in the group stages and increased as the championship went on to between €160 and €350 for the final. Those wanting to enjoy the opening match and opening ceremony at Euro 2016 were looking at a price between €70 and €250. One of the best ticket options for die-hard fans in 2016 is sure to be the Tournament Ticket which allows you to follow your team throughout the tournament. Payment for any invalid tickets is then refunded after the championship ends. However it remains to be seen exactly what the prices will be in 2016.
Over a million tickets will be available for Euro 2016 and UEFA are doing their utmost to ensure that real fans get the tickets before corporate sponsors and big businesses. This is part of their effort to make the tournament accessible and to keep the egalitarian spirit of football alive.
