FIFA Football World Cup 2010 Tickets

The 2010 World Cup will be the 19th FIFA-organised tournament, scheduled for June 11th to July 11th 2010, in South Africa. It will be the first football World Cup finals tournament held in Africa. The official mascot is a green-haired leopard named Zakumi, his name being derived from the international abbreviation from South Africa, “ZA,” and “kumi,” which means 10 in several African languages. The building of 5 new stadia is underway, along with the upgrade of 5 existing venues. Construction costs are estimated at being in the region of R9 billion (about £700 million). Additionally, improvements to the public transport infrastructure and the implementation of special safety measures are planned by the South African authorities.

South Africa hosts the Confederations Cup in June 2009, which will undoubtedly be viewed as a dress rehearsal for the 2010 World Cup finals. However, FIFA are confident that South Africa will be ready. Danny Jordaan, who heads the FIFA 2010 World Cup Organising Committee, stated that they were approaching the tournament with confidence. This seems a bold statement, given the country’s diabolical crime rate, with murders averaging 50 a day and a transport infrastructure still under construction. However, Jordaan was adamant that transport and security plans had been fine-tuned in preparation for the tournament. He added that over 4,000 volunteers had been trained for the first FIFA tournament in Africa. FIFA’s Competitions Division is equally happy, with representative Derick Blanckensee confident that the 4 stadia to be used in Confederations Cup matches are ready, though the pitches need some work as a result of recent use for rugby matches.

Grammy-winning artist Lebo M, best known musical contributions to Disney’s “Lion King,” has been hired to stage the opening and closing ceremonies. Deputy police chief Andre Pruis added that law enforcement forces have been receiving weekly worldwide intelligence reports to aid in foiling any criminal activity. A team from Interpol is also being drafted in to assist the South African police.

A bigger concern for FIFA may well be the court case brought by Durban’s shack dwellers against the KwaZulu-Natal government, in May 2009, over their controversial “Elimination and Prevention of Re-emergence of Slums” Act, which the inhabitants claim is merely a method of “hiding” them in transit camps, out of sight of visiting tourists, in time for the 2010 World Cup.

Qualifying for the 2010 World Cup is now well underway across the globe in the race to join hosts South Africa in the finals. As in 2006, there will be 32 participating nations. South Africa will be joined by five other African nations, plus 13 from Europe, four from South America and Asia and three from Concacaf. There will also be two places decided by an Oceania / Asia play-off and a Concacaf / South America play-off.
