US Open

The US Open tournament is one of the world’s oldest tennis championships. The tournament is chronologically the final Grand Slam tennis tournament of the year, held over a 2-week period in August and September.

The main tournament comprises five different events, namely Men’s Singles, Ladies’ Singles, Men’s, Ladies’ and Mixed doubles. Since 1978, the tournament has been played on hard courts at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre at Flushing Meadows in New York City.

Originally, separate tournaments were held for men and women. The inaugural Men’s Singles Championship took place at Newport Rhode Island, in 1881. The first official Women’s National Singles Championship was held at the Philadelphia Cricket Club in 1887, joined by a National Women’s Doubles and mixed doubles event in 1889. The first National Men’s Doubles event was not held until 1900. 1968 saw the beginning of the “open” era, with all 5 events merging to form the US Open, played on grass courts, at the West Side Tennis Club, Forest Hills, New York. Professional players were allowed to compete for the first time.

Forest Hills changed the court surface to clay in 1975 and the tournament’s move to its current home in 1978 saw it played on a third surface, DecoTurf hard courts.

The US Open was the first Grand Slam tournament to use tie breaks at the end of a set and is unique as the only Grand Slam tournament to use tie breaks in the final set of a match. It has grown from exclusive high society entertainment event to a championship for more than 600 players, competing for total prize money of over $20 million.

In the open era, post 1967, 3 players have won the Men’s Singles 5 times. Jimmy Connors was successful in 1974, 1976, 1978, 1982 and 1983. He is the only champion to have won the US Open on grass, clay and hard courts. Fellow American Pete Sampras won the title in 1990, 1993, 1995, 1996 and 2002. In recent years, Swiss Roger Federer has made the tournament his own with successive victories from 2004 to 2008 inclusive.

Amongst the ladies, American Chris Evert boasts 6 singles titles in the open era, including 4 consecutive successes from 1975 to 1978 inclusive. However, Martina Navratilova is arguable the most successful women player of the open era, with a total of 16 titles; 4 singles, 9 doubles and 3 mixed doubles between 1977 and 2006.

Pete Sampras was the youngest Men’s Singles winner, aged 19 years and 1 month, in 1990, while Tracy Austin, aged just 16 years 8 months, denied Chris Evert a 5th consecutive Ladies’ Singles win in 1979.
